Independent Projects in Oil Painting

9/14-10/5, Mondays, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Work on your oil painting projects and receive individual instruction. Students drive the topics, and various techniques in oil painting will be demonstrated. Materials, methods such as: color mixing, composition will be covered. Classes will be tailored to student’s specific questions and goals. All skill levels welcome.

Low-Relief or Portrait Bust From Life
The Mansion House Art Gallery, Hagerstown, MD
10/24 & 10/25, Thurs & Fri 10:30 am – 4:00 pm
Students work from a live model to sculpt either a low-relief or portrait bust in water-based clay. Topics explored include: proper use of tools, properties of clay, preparation for firing and finishing details.Lunch is included in the workshop fee. Model fees are extra. Armatures are available to purchase for $25. Supply fee $25.

Portrait Drawing in Charcoal
The Delaplaine Arts Education Center, Frederick. MD
10/29-11/19, Thursdays 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
This class begins by discussing the anatomy and planes of the head, then work with a live model to create a charcoal drawing. Techniques of charcoal will be shown and examples of charcoal portraits by such artists as Kathe Kollwitz, John Singer Sargent and others, will be looked at for inspiration. Creating a value study, tips for blending, choosing the right paper, and making your own charcoal are just a few of the things we will explore in class. Tuition includes supplies and modelling fees.

Sculpting From the Masters: High Relief

11/1-12/13, Sundays 1:00 pm-4:00 pm
Working from plaster casts of sculptures by artists such as Rodin, Carpeaux, and Michelangelo, create your own copy in clay while learning proportions, anatomy, expression, and art history. Demonstrations as well as individual critiques are included. Previous drawing or sculpting experience is recommended. Tuition includes supplies and firing. Note: There will be no class on Nov. 29.

Sculpting The Portrait in Low Relief
Delaplaine Arts Center, Frederick, MD
Saturday, July 26th 10-4 & Sunday, July 27th 12-4
Taking inspiration from the portrait reliefs of Saint-Gaudens, Verrocchio, and other Renaissance masters, sculpt a portrait in bas (low) relief using a personal photo (in profile view) as your reference. Learn techniques for creating the illusion of depth in a shallow space and combine drawing and sculpting to create a shallow relief that can be wall-mounted after firing.
Topics explored will include composition, properties of clay, preparation for firing, and finishing details. This weekend workshop is open to all levels of sculpting but best for students with some drawing experience. Tuition includes supplies and firing.
NOTE: This workshop meets on Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
