Delaplaine Arts Center, Frederick, MD 11/11-12/16 M 6-9 pm Sculpting From The Masters: High Relief: Working from plaster casts of work by such sculptors as Rodin, Carpeaux, and Michelangelo, create your own copy in clay while learning about proportions, anatomy, expression, composition, and art history. Demonstrations as well as individual critiques will be part of the class. Previous drawing or sculpting experience is recommended. Delaplaine Arts Center, Frederick, MD 10/17-11/21 Th 6-9 pm Drawing The Portrait in Charcoal: This class will begin by discussing the anatomy and planes of the head, then work from a different live model each session to create a charcoal drawing. Techniques of charcoal drawing will be discussed, and examples of charcoal portraits by such artists as Kollwitz, Sargent, and others will be looked to for inspiration. Creating a value study, tips for blending, choosing the right paper, and making your own charcoal are just a few of the things we will explore in class. Previous drawing experience is recommended. Valley Art Association, Hagerstown, MD Oct 25, F and Nov 1, F 10:30-4:30 Sculpting A Low Relief workshop: Taking inspiration from the portrait reliefs of Saint-Gaudens, Verrochio, and other Renaissance masters, you will sculpt a bas (low) relief using a personal photo (recommended to be in profile view if a portrait) as your reference. You will learn techniques for creating the illusion of depth in a shallow space, and combine drawing and sculpting to create a shallow relief that can be wall-mounted after firing. Topics explored will include proper use of tools, properties of clay, preparation for firing, and finishing details. This class is open to all levels of sculpting but best for students with some drawing experience. $165/$150 (VAA members) Cost includes lunch and use of tools.
