Sculpting The Portrait: Low Relief  THIS CLASS IS FULL: Call to be placed on waiting list
Taking inspiration from the portrait reliefs of Saint-Gaudens, Verrochio, and other Renaissance masters, you will sculpt a portrait in bas (low) relief using a personal photo (in profile view) as your reference. You will learn techniques for creating the illusion of depth in a shallow space, and combine drawing and sculpting to create a shallow relief that can be wall-mounted after firing. Topics explored will include proper use of tools, properties of clay, preparation for firing, and finishing details. Open to all levels, this class is a good introduction to sculpture for someone who has a drawing background. WINTER SESSION 2023

Sculpting The Portrait
: Working from a model, you will create a 1/2 life size portrait bust out of water-based clay. We will discuss anatomy, look at historical examples of portrait busts. This class will also have individual critiques and class demonstrations on each of the features, technical aspects of working in clay, and preparing the piece for firing. Drawing the Costumed Figure: Long Pose: Working from costumed models (each setup will be for two 3 hr. classes) these longer poses with charcoal drawing will cover portraiture, drapery study, background and still life. Painting the Portrait on Copper
Highlighting the substrate as well as covering techniques in portraiture. Copper was commonly used for oil painting in the early 16th century because of it's stability and reflective quality. Learn how to prepare the surface for oil paints and use thin layers of glazing to achieve a luminosity. We will be working from a live model and discussing anatomy, gesture, composition, color harmony and expression.This is an intermediate class recommended for people who have experience in oil painting,
working with a limited palette (a warm and cool of each primary, plus burnt sienna, titanium white and ivory black) and discussing color mixing and color theory.Costs $245 non-members/230 for members of VAA and WCMFA.
