SPRING SESSION 2022
Sculpting The Features: Eyes and Ears Focusing on the features is a traditional approach to learning portrait sculpture. By copying casts of the features of David by Michelangelo, you will learn both the sculpting methods and the anatomy and form of the feature. Each student will work from their own cast (eyes or ears) and duplicate it in clay, which then can be hollowed out for firing. If time allows, students may sculpt more than one feature. Class will include demonstrations and discussions of anatomy and sculpting methods. Tuition includes all supplies. Tues 6-9. Apr 5- May 3. $245 ($220 member) of The Delaplaine. https://delaplaine.org/class/?id=22-4-SC01

SEPTEMBER 15 and 16, Thurs and Fri. 10:30-4:30
Portrait Relief Sculpting In this workshop each student will work on a copy of a plaster portrait “mask” or high relief from a plaster copy of a masterwork. The workshop is meant as an overview and will touch on aspects of anatomy of the head, historical examples of portraits, tools, discussion of preparation for firing, as well as possible finishing techniques. There will be a 2 easel setup for each student, both with boards-one with the plaster copy attached and the other for the students’ clay. The setup allows for a one-to-one translation and is great for beginning and intermediate sculptors. The goal of the workshop is to familiarize students with the structure of individual facial features, to learn about the properties of water-based clay and the use of specific tools, and sculpture techniques. The class is also beneficial to painters, providing a new appreciation of anatomy and form. Costs $180/165 for members of VAA and WCMFA. Lunch is included in the workshop fee.
